Disney World's Piano Bar: Jellyrolls
My aunt recently gave me this writing prompt book. Each prompt has 10 words they want you to use. You will see those 10 words underlined through the story. This was the first one in the book titled "A Strange Request at a Piano Bar". (Feel free to like, share and comment!)
A young woman freshly joining the '21 and up' club decided to go visit her friend in Orlando for spring break. One afternoon, they decide to walk around at a carnival that was in town. They were having a nice relaxing time, walking around watching contests and seeing exhibits one included a painting of her beloved Kermit the Frog. She saw families having fun. There was this group of dancers on stage, one performer was wearing a white mask. All this reminds her of when her parents would take her to fairs.
The smell of some of her favorite foods wafting through the air brought her back to the current moment: such a candied apple, kettle corn and what possibly smelled of sassafras tea. It was nice; but, she soon decided the moment had filled with oxidation and it was a bit mundane. She wanted to do something a bit different. She expressed her thoughts to her friend.
Her friend smiled and stated "This may be a sprained idea; but I know you love music and there's a place that has some awesome live music; but, it's a bar and I know that's not really your scene." She responded "You're right; but, I do want to do something different and I love all types of music!" So they grabbed a snack, went back to the friends tiny apartment, which she shared with two other girls. The four of them got ready to go to Jellyrollls, a piano bar on Disney's Boardwalk.
When they arrived she was walking towards the building and could already hear the pianos blasting through the night air and the singer belting. When she walked under the sign and through the building she felt awkward and controversy filled her thoughts. What would her strict parents or anyone from her Kentucky small town (especially those from her church) think?
After walking in they proceed to pick a table, the two roommates went and got some salty, popcorn for the four of them to chow down on. The friend hands her a napkin and a pen and to get over the music essentially yells 'Write down a song you want to hear!" She smiles and writes down a juvenile request. She is not expecting it to be played. The friend takes the napkin, reads it and thinks "of all the songs in the world you pick that one"? With a 10$ bill and the napkin in hand she walks up to the piano. She is shaking her head and plops them down on the piano and thinks "What a waste of 10 dollars!"
Meanwhile, her friend is starting to feel uneasy while she noticed people around her. To her left, some guy was flirting with some girl. It bothered her because the girl looked unimpressed. To her right, some drunk girl was trying to perfect the art of the twirl. She kept spinning around and around. The guy directly behind her was shouting "Freebird". She decided just to focus on the music, which is why she came!
Almost two hours passed without hearing this song. The second piano player read the napkin, got an odd look on his face and thought "a strange request". The first piano player stands up from his stool, sits on top of the piano says "Well I may never sing this song again, so let's go for it!" Everyone is confused. The second piano player starts playing the song she had requested from the first note her face beams. The first piano player starts singing "The Rainbow Connection." The crowd goes wild! It became an instant fan-favorite and is sang most nights, especially on Sundays, when many locals go.
