Elvis (2022) Review

Elvis came into theaters rocking its way to the top spot. Here’s my thoughts!

I like Elvis’s biggest hits, but I probably couldn’t name any song that wasn’t a hit. I do like Elvis’s music, but I guess am too young to know more than the general public. I liked how this movie showed his musical influences. I have always been drawn to Elvis because of the diverse music he recorded. He is the #1 recording artist of all time for a reason. Heck, Disney has a movie where half the soundtrack is his music. He made and continues to make his impact on pop culture and the music industry for decades.

I had no idea who Austin Butler is. It was perfect for this somewhat unknown actor to portray this role because he became Elvis without recognition getting in the way. He apparently studied Elvis two years to become the legend. He got the accent down perfectly as well as the mannerisms. It was impressive. His acting never felt cheap. He should get an Oscar nomination! I wouldn't be shocked if this gets him many future roles!

Tom Hanks almost disappeared into this character. He barely looked like himself at all. I didn’t know the story behind his character which was interesting to learn this story. The story is told from his perspective and that was interesting and not quite what I was expecting. The rest of the cast were perfect. I don’t think I recognized anyone in this movie besides Hanks.

I think the movie made some odd choices seeing how it’s about 2 hours and 45 minutes it didn’t cover a lot. It dived deep into specific things and hit the surface on others. Which made it unique. It’s fun, energetic, exhausting and in moments a tad boring. The director was also the screenwriter.

The soundtrack had some odd choices. There were 2 rap sounding songs. Was rap around in the 60’s? I am not sure. It made me scratch my head. I know he had influence from artist from many genres and races. The rest of the music was Elvis’s songs essentially, as to be expected. The makeup, hair and costumes were excellent.

I give it a 4.5/5. Like, comment and share.
