Lightyear: Spoiler-Free Review
In 1995, Andy went and saw a movie in theatres that made him want an action figure from it. "Lightyear" is that movie. So fast forward 27 years we get to see it. I understand why Andy thinks Buzz Lightyear is a cool role model and character. I actually like his character more from this movie than the Toy Story movies. Maybe it was just easier to focus on him here than with other characters (Woody, Hamm, Rex etc).
This is the first Pixar movie released to theatres since Covid so it was nice to see Pixar on the big screen again. (I've seen all the Toy Story films on screen so I had to see this one too!) Welcome back Pixar!
The story feels more like a sequel. There could be a prequel or a sequel. Or I guess Pixar could go the Toy Story 2 route and fill you in on some backstory of Buzz, like you see with Woody. I have questions that were not answered on both sides of this story.
It starts off with Lightyear and his cohort already well established as space rangers. (Which is why I say there could be a prequel.) They make a great team. Later, you meet some other fun characters. Sok, the robotic cat, reminded me a bit of Baymax; however; me being a cat man I prefer Sox. I quite enjoyed his character arc. All the characters I liked. They all have some comedic timing, humanized and make the story entertaining. The cast compliment the main character well. The villain surprised me, and I quite enjoyed. I think it is my favorite villain possibly in Pixar to date. I have never thought Pixar villains are as compelling as Disney ones but this one comes the closest.
The plot was great! It kept me on the edge of my seat. It was more of a sci-fi/adventure type film. (Every Toy Story film could be placed into different genres, if you think about it.) This movie made me laugh, cry and smile.
My biggest complaint is this movie is released in 1995 according to the opening and a couple things would be different if it were actually released then. Made me go "hmm." I give it an 8/10. It was a good story, kept me entertained and I recommend it. Also, if you see it there are 3 end credit scenes!
Go see it! Let me know what you think! As always feel free to like, share and comment!
